Why Australian Patients Choose India for Knee Replacement
Australia's public health system is excellent for emergencies, but elective orthopaedic surgery — particularly knee replacement — involves waiting lists of 12–18 months in the public system. Private hospital costs, even with health insurance, often leave patients with out-of-pocket expenses of AUD 10,000–25,000 or more.
India's top orthopaedic hospitals offer the same surgical outcomes, the same implant brands, and the same post-operative physiotherapy — at 75–80% less. Many Indian orthopaedic surgeons have completed fellowships in Australia, the UK, or the USA. English is the primary language of medical practice, so there is no communication barrier.
For Australians specifically, the cities of Kochi (Kerala) and Bangalore (Karnataka) offer the best combination of hospital quality, international patient infrastructure, and flight connectivity from Sydney and Melbourne.

Step-by-Step Travel Guide for Australian Patients
From your first enquiry to flying home, here is exactly what to expect. Medworth coordinates every step — you focus on getting better.
Apply for e-Medical Visa
Australian passport holders can apply for an Indian e-Medical Visa online at indianvisaonline.gov.in. The visa is valid for 60 days (triple entry) and is typically approved within 3–5 business days. You will need: a scanned passport, a recent photo, a letter from the Indian hospital confirming your treatment, and a credit/debit card for the fee (USD 80, approximately AUD 120–125).
Book your flights
For Kochi: Qantas/Singapore Airlines via Singapore (SIN → COK). For Bangalore: Qantas/Singapore Airlines via Singapore (SIN → BLR), or IndiGo/Air India from Singapore. Book economy or premium economy — the flight is 13–16 hours. We recommend arriving 2 days before surgery to rest and complete pre-op investigations.
Pre-op consultation (virtual)
Before you travel, Medworth arranges a virtual consultation with your assigned surgeon. Share your X-rays, MRI scans, and blood reports. The surgeon reviews your case, confirms the procedure plan, and answers your questions. This eliminates surprises on arrival.
Arrival & airport pickup
Medworth arranges a private car pickup from the airport. Your coordinator meets you at arrivals, assists with any formalities, and takes you directly to your accommodation or the hospital. No navigating unfamiliar transport after a long flight.
Pre-op investigations (Day 1–2)
On arrival, the hospital conducts blood tests, ECG, chest X-ray, and a final orthopaedic assessment. This typically takes half a day. Your coordinator is with you throughout.
Surgery & hospital stay (Day 3–9)
Knee replacement surgery takes 1.5–2 hours under spinal or general anaesthesia. You will stay in a private room for 5–7 nights. Physiotherapy begins the day after surgery — most patients walk with a frame within 24 hours. Your companion can stay in the room with you.
Recovery & discharge (Day 10–21)
After discharge, you stay in a serviced apartment or hotel near the hospital for 10–14 days. Daily physiotherapy sessions are arranged. Your surgeon reviews you at Day 7 and Day 14 post-op. Medworth coordinates all follow-up appointments.
Fly home (Day 22–28)
Most patients are cleared to fly home 3–4 weeks after surgery. We provide a detailed discharge summary, X-ray reports, and a letter for your Australian GP. We also arrange compression stockings and DVT prophylaxis for the flight.
e-Medical Visa for Australian Passport Holders
Medworth provides the hospital letter required for your visa application as part of our coordination service.

A common concern for Australian patients is whether Indian hospitals use the same quality implants as back home. The answer is yes — our partner hospitals use the same global brands available in Australian hospitals.

All four of our partner hospitals offer robotic-assisted knee replacement (MAKO by Stryker). Robotic surgery uses a 3D CT-based plan to position the implant with sub-millimetre accuracy, reducing the risk of malalignment and improving long-term outcomes. The additional cost in India (AUD 1,000–2,000 extra) is still far less than the base cost of conventional knee replacement in Australia.
